Universiteit Gent (UGent), Belgium

Ghent University hosts the Core Facility Centre for X-ray Tomography (UGCT). The UGCT infrastructure provides access to six dedicated high-resolution X-ray tomography systems, each with specific complementary design parameters. With a strong expertise in X-ray tomography, UGCT provides analysis of (multiphase) fluid flow experiments, weathering of (natural) materials, and geo-mechanical testing.

Central European Institute of Technology (CEITEC), Czechia

CEITEC hosts two facilities namely, the laboratories of X-ray micro- and nano- computed tomography (CT), and Laser-Induced Breakdown Spectroscopy (LIBS). Through the use of our advanced CT systems, we offer reconstruction 3D models of sample morphology, volume quantification, identification of bulk density, particle distribution and orientation, porosity and permeability, and simulation of fluid, electrical, or thermal flow. Our LIBS technology offers multi-elemental detection (including Li, Be, and H) and elemental imaging.

Universite de Pau et de Pavs de l’Adour (UPPA), France

The DMEX Centre for X-ray Imaging at UPPA hosts three X-ray tomographs, enabling to cover a large panel of spatial resolutions, sample sizes, contrast modalities, and acquisition speeds. While samples can be tested under ambient conditions, the centre has built up a unique competence in conducting in situ and in operando testing. This includes tension/compression, reactive flow, heating/cooling, or even electrochemical cycling experiments of a wide range of materials.

RWTH Aachen University (RWTH), Germany

The Edinburgh-Aachen Geoscience Microtomography group has, over the past decade, developed and used a wide range of X-ray transparent experimental setups in applications that cover most aspects of sustainable geo-energy research. The equipment we will share includes the latest flagship triaxial rig, which can reproduce most subsurface reservoir conditions. The group is in discussion with PSICHÉ at SOLEIL to establish guaranteed synchrotron access for users through a block beamtime allocation.

Technische Universität Bergakademie Freiberg (TUBAF), Germany

TUBAF is equipped with a versatile X-ray tomographic system, the Institute for Mechanical Process Engineering and Mineral Processing (MVTAT) at TUBAF is a leading partner in analyzing disperse particulate systems. With the use of our high-resolution 3D X-ray microscope, equipped with a load cell and in-situ flow cell, multi-phase flow inside Earth materials can be characterized.

Helmholtz-Zentrum Dresden-Rossendorf (HZDR), Germany

The Helmholtz Institute Freiberg for Resource Technology (HIF) at HZDR is specialised in the application of correlative chemical 2D and 3D imaging for quantitative mineralogical analysis with resolutions ranging from the micron to metre scales. This workflow makes use of both high-resolution electron microscopes and X-ray microscopes.

Istituto Nazionale di Geofisica e Vulcanologia (INGV), Italy

Through EXCITE, INGV provides access to two research facilities. The Micro-CT laboratory at INGV-OV offers non-destructive 3D high-resolution (up to the submicron) imaging of internal micro-structures of geomaterials from various geological environments, employing X-ray Micro-CT. The INGV-RM1 HPHT Laboratory offers expertise in micro- to nano-scale imaging, micro-analytical determination of major to minor elements, and chemical mapping of various materials, using FIB-SEM and electron microprobe equipment.

They also specialize in multi-scale imaging coupling electron and X-ray microscopy, and in element and isotope ratio mapping using NanoSIMS.

This platform provides access to Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) equipment that is specialized in high-resolution crystallographic mapping using electron backscattered diffraction (EBSD) and is hosted by Géosciences Montpellier.

The Potsdam Imaging and Spectral analysis (PISA) facility at GFZ operate earth science-specific, state-of-the-art electron microscopes that allow various imaging and analyses workflows for structural, crystallographic and chemical studies of earth materials both in two- and three-dimensions. This, is achieved with an advanced line up of a FEG-SEM, two FIB-SEMs, and two FEG-TEMs.
