Relive EGU25 from EXCITE perspective

A staggering 20.000 people attended the European Geosciences Union (EGU) conference in Vienna, Austria, held from 27 April to 1 May 2025. The EXCITE Network welcomed a steady stream of potential and existing collaborators at the exhibition booth, eager to learn more about the third open call for free-of-charge access to 40 imaging facilities, which is open until May 23rd. Numerous EXCITE users also showcased their collaborative projects with the EXCITE Network at the conference. This year for the first time, we successfully hosted four expert sessions by partners from the EXCITE Network who wanted to share their expertise. EGU2025 also marks the launch of the EXCITE Academy, through which we aim to share knowledge and expertise to advance the field of geo-imaging together. Stay tuned for EXCITE Academy events near you!

The EXCITE Network booth at the exhibition welcomed a steady stream of enthusiasts throughout the conference. The booth was staffed by partners in the EXCITE Network from different institutes so we were able to offer a wide range of technical expertise to answer questions you may have about the different techniques and expertise offered by the EXCITE Network. Have a look at the photos to get a sense of the vibe.

Also want free-of-charge access to 40 imaging facilities, offered at 22 institutes in 14 European and partner countries? More information on the third open call here. You have until May 23rd to apply!

Expert Sessions

Partners in the EXCITE Network were excited to share their expertise during expert sessions held at the exhibition booth.

On Monday and Friday, Florian Fusseis and Eranga Jayawickrama (RWTH Aachen, Germany) demonstrated their experimental rig, Heitt Mjölnir, for 4D OPERANDO Imaging.

On Wednesday, Laurenz Schröer from Ghent University (Belgium) showcased applications for 3D/4D X-ray microCT at facility UGCT. Applications included mimicry of planet & pore scale processes, hydrogen storage and innovative sustainable materials.

Thursday it was Milad Naderloo’s turn from TU Delft (The Netherlands), who talked about imaging of hydrogen as brine multiphase flow in porous rock.

These sessions were a resounding success as they drew in an interested crowd every time. We are determined to offer these opportunities again next time. Have you missed these sessions and are you interested in learning more? Subscribe to the newsletter and stay up-to-date of events near you!

Sharing knowledge

The EXCITE Network strongly believes that by sharing knowledge, experiences and ideas, we can inspire and advance Earth and environmental sciences together. Through an open community and collaborative sharing platform, the EXCITE Academy, we offer live and online events, and an online searchable database, the Academy Hub.

Users of the EXCITE facilities and experts alike share their experience and expertise in monthly, short lunchtime webinars. On Thursday May 22nd we kick off the EXCITE Academy Webinar Series with Denis Fougerouse, an expert in atom probe tomography for applications in Earth Sciences. More information and registration here.

The Academy Hub brings together events, expertise, training, tools and services of imaging techniques. Activities are developed continuously during the project, so the Academy Hub will grow accordingly. Subscribe to the EXCITE newsletter if you like to stay updated of any additions.
